Old Metros return for Unity Games
October 22, 2001 (Official Press Release)

Former MetroStars standout and Kearny, NJ native Tony Meola (Kansas City Wizards), along with MLS stars Diego Serna (Miami Fusion), Jeff Agoos (San Jose Earthquakes), Carlos Llamosa (Miami) and John Harkes (Columbus Crew), have all accepted invitations and are expected to play in the Unity Games this Sunday, October 28 at Giants Stadium.

The Unity Games feature the men's and women's pro soccer teams from both New York and Washington, DC (the MetroStars and D.C. United from MLS and the New York Power and Washington Freedom from the WUSA) in a fundraising doubleheader for the September 11 relief efforts in both cities.

All tickets for the 4 p.m. doubleheader, featuring WUSA MVP Tiffeny Milbrett and the Power and Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom in the first game and the MetroStars and D.C. United in the second game, are $20. All net proceeds will go to the Soccer United Relief Fund to benefit the relief and recovery efforts in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Meola, Serna, Harkes, Agoos and Llamosa join former MetroStars fan favorites Rhett Harty, Miles Joseph and Brian Kelly, all previously announced, for the benefit game.

Serna, Llamosa and Agoos, the 2001 Defender of the Year and a member of the MLS Cup champion Earthquakes, were all selected to this year's MLS Pepsi Best 11. Llamosa, Agoos and Harkes, another Kearny native, are all former members of D.C. United and will play for them once again, while Serna, Meola, Thornton, Harty, Joseph and Kelly will play for the MetroStars.

The addition of Meola, along with current MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard, give the MetroStars two goalkeepers who have both been named Aquafina Goalkeeper of the Year during their careers. Meola was also Howard's mentor when Howard first broke into the league in 1998.

"These events not only affected our cities and our country, but the whole world," said MetroStars forward Clint Mathis. "Lots of people have asked, 'What can I do?' Well, we as players can start by doing our jobs. This (the Unity Games) is something we all can do to help in what little way we can."
